The methodology: from keyword matrix to ranking pages

Here's how we approach it. Every programmatic SEO project follows the same sequence, regardless of industry.

1. Map the keyword universe

Before building anything, we analyse your data dimensions against actual search volume. Which combinations have demand? Which don't? A local services business might generate 500 to 1,000 viable pages. A national real estate platform or job board could generate 10,000 or more.

This step prevents the most common mistake in programmatic SEO: building pages nobody is searching for. Not every combination justifies a page. Architecture-first means determining exactly which page types and combinations have genuine demand before committing to a build.

2. Design the URL architecture and templates

The URL hierarchy, page templates, and content structure for each programmatic page type are designed together. URLs follow a logical, semantic pattern. Templates dynamically generate optimised titles, meta descriptions, H1 headings, and body content for each combination.

3. Build the internal linking architecture

At scale, internal linking is what makes or breaks a programmatic site. We design hub-and-spoke models where category pages link out to all pages in their group, breadcrumb hierarchies that establish clear relationships, and cross-linking patterns that connect related pages into topical clusters.

The targets: every important page reachable within three clicks of the homepage, 8 to 15 relevant outgoing links per page, and zero orphan pages. For sites with thousands of pages, this linking has to be automated through programmatic rules, not maintained manually.

4. Protect crawl budget and indexation

Thousands of pages mean nothing if Google can't crawl them efficiently. We implement XML sitemap segmentation by category and priority tier, strategic noindex policies for pages below quality thresholds, canonical tags for near-duplicate variations, and robots.txt directives to prevent crawlers from wasting budget on filter combinations and parameter URLs.

5. Implement dual navigation

This is a detail most implementations miss. Users interact with your site through search functionality and filters. Crawlers need flat, linked HTML structures. These are fundamentally different navigation paradigms, and a programmatic site needs both.

How we grew Century 21's organic traffic by 8,900%

The theory is one thing. Here's what it looks like in practice.

Century 21, one of the largest real estate franchise networks, commissioned a complete website rebuild. We were engaged from the start, conducting an extensive audit of the legacy site and working directly with the web agency through wireframes and development.

What we found

The legacy site was capturing only a fraction of its potential search demand. Navigation linked only to major municipalities, leaving hundreds of smaller locations without crawlable entry points. There was no search engine friendly URL structure for property type, transaction, and location combinations. Link equity wasn't flowing to high-value pages. And some filter combinations were creating crawl budget waste through thousands of thin, near-duplicate URLs.

What we built

We designed a single page template that automatically generated indexable pages for every combination of property type (apartment, house, commercial), transaction type (for sale, for rent), province, and municipality. Each page carried dynamically generated optimised URLs, title tags, meta descriptions, and H1 headings.

Internal linking was built directly into the template, automatically connecting related pages into topical clusters that reinforced semantic relevance across the entire site. Crawl budget was protected by noindexing low-value filter pages. All valuable combinations were reachable within three clicks of the homepage. A page-level redirect map preserved rankings from the legacy site.

The results

  • Organic traffic: from 1,000 to 90,000 monthly visitors. An 8,900% increase.
  • Top 10 positions: 2,490 keywords ranking on page one.
  • Both Dutch and French language versions performing across the Belgian market.

Why most programmatic SEO fails

Industry estimates suggest a majority of programmatic SEO implementations fail without proper architecture and quality controls. Here's what goes wrong.

Thin content at scale

Pages that lack unique, substantive content risk thin-content penalties. Pages that only swap a city name or product name while keeping everything else identical are particularly vulnerable. Google's spam detection systems, including what appears to be an internally named "Firefly" system (based on analysis of leaked internal documentation), are designed to detect scaled content abuse with high accuracy.

An industry best practice is to aim for 500 or more unique words per page with 30 to 40% content differentiation between pages in the same template group.

No unique value per page

Google defines doorway pages as pages created to rank for similar queries that lead users to intermediate pages without useful content. If 5,000 pages for "plumber in [city]" all show the same text with only the city name changed, that's not programmatic SEO. That's spam.

Every page needs a reason to exist beyond targeting a keyword. The test is simple: would a user find this page valuable on its own?

Ignoring crawl budget

Thousands of low-value pages consume crawl budget that should go to high-value pages. Faceted navigation and filter parameters can create millions of crawlable but worthless URLs. Without active crawl budget management, your best pages get crawled less frequently, and your worst pages drag down the whole site.

The August 2025 spam update specifically targeted mass-generated content, doorway pages, and scaled low-quality content. Earlier, Google's March 2024 core update resulted in a 45% reduction in low-quality, unoriginal content in search results.
